Zone Trainer
Heart rate zones hands-free
Zone training made simple. Hear your heart rate zone changes announced out loud while you run or bike. Or read your zone from across the room while you lift or do yoga. No accounts, no tracking, no premium features to unlock.
Free. iPhone and iPad.
The whole screen is the zone. That's the entire interface.
- Announced in your earbudsZone changes are spoken aloud, so you can keep going without checking a screen. The phone can be in a pocket, screen off.
- Or read it across the roomOn a bench or a mat, the zone fills the whole screen in its own colour. No dials, no graphs, nothing competing for space. It's the thing people tell me they like most.
- Your zones, your numbersSet all five boundaries yourself, or enter your age and let the app work them out.
- Any Bluetooth heart rate sensorChest straps, arm bands, and the Garmin and Polar watches that broadcast. Zone Trainer speaks the standard heart rate profile, so if your sensor pairs with your phone it works here, and it can feed Strava or MapMyRun at the same time.
- Or an Apple Watch
Zone Trainer now works with Apple Watch. Because Apple allows only one app at a time to monitor heart rate
during a workout, it can't be used alongside other fitness apps. - Nothing to unlockNo account, no subscription, no upsell. Nothing is collected and nothing leaves your device. Privacy policy
What it won't do
Zone Trainer isn't a fitness tracker. It doesn't save your workouts, draw graphs, keep a history, or add anything to Health. It tells you your zone while you're moving, and that's the whole app. If you want your session recorded, run a proper recording app alongside it with a Bluetooth sensor.
Set your own zones
Five boundaries, each editable. Tap “Calculate from Age” for a sensible starting point if you don't already know your numbers.
I made this
I'm Stan. I built Zone Trainer because I wanted to do zone 2 training on a bike and found myself staring at my wrist instead of the trail.
It's a tool I made for myself, not a company. It's free, there's no account to create, and nothing you do with it leaves your phone: not your heart rate, not your location, not an analytics ping.
Ideas and bug reports are welcome. Get in touch.
Try Stan's other apps
Small apps, made by me to solve my own problems or just for fun!
- Session Cam Record a whole practice session, keep only the attempts.
- VideoTag Print a QR sticker that plays a video. Label a box, scan it years later.
- Lifeslice A photo and a slice of your day, every few minutes. Everything stays on your Mac.
- Super Selfie Dance Match the smileys with your face, in time with the music.
