If you're writing about a problem, it helps enormously to know which heart rate monitor you're using, and whether you're on an iPhone or an iPad.

Common questions

My heart rate monitor doesn't show up in the list.
Zone Trainer finds sensors over Bluetooth directly, so the usual culprits are: it isn't awake (a chest strap usually wakes when you wet the contacts and put it on), its battery is flat, or it's still connected to something else. Most sensors talk to one device at a time, so quit any other app or watch that's holding it. If you previously paired it in the iOS Settings app, that can also keep it occupied.
I can see my heart rate, but I don't hear anything.
The zone is announced when it changes, not continuously, so at a steady effort it's quiet by design. Beyond that, check the speaker button in the app isn't muted, that your phone isn't in silent mode, and that the volume is up while audio is actually playing. If you're on headphones, make sure the phone is actually routed to them.
The voice sounds robotic. Can I improve it?
Yes, and it's worth doing. Zone Trainer uses the best voice installed on your device, but the one iOS ships with is the compact version, which is the dated-sounding one. Go to Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices, English, and download any voice marked Enhanced or Premium. Zone Trainer picks it up by itself the next time it speaks, so there's nothing to set in the app. It's a sizeable one-off download, so do it on wifi. Note that it may not be the same speaker you hear from Siri: Zone Trainer goes for the best available recording rather than matching the system voice.
Can I use it at the same time as Strava or MapMyRun?
Yes, with a Bluetooth sensor. Most broadcast to several apps at once, so Zone Trainer can announce your zone while another app records the workout. This does not work with the Apple Watch option. See below.
How do I use my Apple Watch instead of a Bluetooth sensor?
Open Zone Trainer on the watch and tap Start, then pick Apple Watch as the source on the iPhone. The watch app has to be running for readings to arrive; if the iPhone says so, that's what it means.
Why does starting Zone Trainer on my watch stop my other workout?
The watch allows only one workout at a time, and gives it to whichever app asked most recently. So starting Zone Trainer ends a workout another app was recording, and starting another app's workout ends Zone Trainer's. This is how the watch works and no app can get around it. If you want to record your session, use a Bluetooth sensor with Zone Trainer instead, and then nothing competes.
Does Zone Trainer save my workouts?
No, deliberately. It isn't a tracker: it tells you your zone while you move and keeps no history, no graphs, and adds nothing to the Health app. Use a recording app alongside it if you want your session saved.
The Apple Watch option isn't there on my iPad.
That's expected. An iPad can't pair with an Apple Watch, so the option is hidden. A Bluetooth sensor works on iPad exactly as it does on iPhone.
How do I set my zones?
Tap the gear, and edit any of the five boundaries. If you don't know your numbers, “Calculate from Age” gives a reasonable starting point based on your age. They're your numbers. If a coach or a lab test gave you different ones, enter those.
What data do you collect about me?
None whatsoever. There's no account, no analytics, and the app makes no network connections at all. The privacy policy spells this out.
